Pat McGrath Invented a New Way to Wear Lipstick for Maison Margiela's Spring 2018 Show

This is why she's the master.

Makeup artist Pat McGrath is a master of her craft at all times, but she routinely manages to outdo herself on the creativity and innovation fronts for the artful Maison Margiela runway shows. The Spring 2018 edition was no exception: McGrath complemented John Galliano's collection of trench coats and feathers by straight-up inventing a new way to wear lipstick.

Each model on the Margiela runway wore an electric fuchsia lip with a soft matte finish and super-precise edges — with a negative-space channel running down through the center. In a way, it mimicked the metal accessories models wore on their lips for Margiela's Fall 2017 Couture show, creating that same split-lip optical illusion without the need for the jewelry.

On Instagram, McGrath described the look as an "ultra-matte lip with Margiela skin," which she made luminous and dewy with a combination of her magical Pat McGrath touch and, of course, her very own Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish 003. The exact shade on the lips is Full Panic, the bright pink in the Pat McGrath Labs Matte Trance Lipstick line.

Meanwhile, hairstylist Eugene Souleiman worked some incredible beauty magic for the show as well, once again creating a multimedia look. This time around, he used narrow, flowing feathers in a variety of different hues; in some cases, models wore brightly colored swim caps, elaborate headbands or feathered caps. A few ladies in the cast were kept relatively simple in the hair department, styled with pared-down, slicked-back, messy ponytails.
