Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than five million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.
To cap off Fashionista's Pop Culture Week, I thought I'd do something a little different for today's YouTube Tutorial of the Week. Lisa Eldridge created the following tutorial — in which she transforms herself into "Ziggy Stardust"-era David Bowie with makeup — as part of her "Icons & Idols" series, but I'd be hard-pressed to come up with a better example of a pop culturally relevant makeup tutorial.
In the video, Eldridge talks about how she studied the technique, tools and products Bowie's makeup artist, Pierre LaRoche, used during that era to get the look just right. And damn, did that pay off — even without the spot-on Bowie wig, Eldridge looks alarmingly Bowie-esque when all is said and done. It's a mesmerizing triumph of makeup artistry, and I highly recommend watching it below.
