Now that October has suddenly arrived, Halloween fans are doing some heavy research — and shopping — for the spooky holiday. The National Retail Federation even predicts that 2017 will hit a record high of $9.1 billion when it comes to Halloween spending. (Last year brought in an impressive $8.4 billion from consumers.), which attributes half of its online orders to costume purchases, is already seeing an increase in its sales by 25 percent compared to last year, as well as a 30 percent rise in plus-size costume sales.

On Pinterest, 220 million Halloween ideas are saved on users' boards in the U.S. annually, which goes to show that this holiday is serious business, people! Read on to find out what are likely to be the most popular pop culture-related Halloween costumes this year, and if none of them strike your fancy, you can always dress up as "Sexy Fake News."

Big Little Lies

The award-winning HBO series "Big Little Lies" is stirring up some costume creativity among best girlfriends this Halloween. Pinterest noticed a 64 percent jump in pins by users from last year, especially for ideas on how to wear something similar to the characters' own Audrey Hepburn costumes from the show's final episode.

Star Wars

The epic film franchise is always a solid choice when it comes to getting festive for Halloween. With a slew of recent and upcoming "Stars Wars" films — as well as the sad news of Carrie Fisher's death last year — fans are looking to the franchise's characters for costume ideas with 180K-plus pins currently saved on Pinterest.


The television series-turned-big screen blockbuster's signature red one-piece will likely make plenty of cameos this Halloween as Pinterest noticed a 147 percent spike from users compared to last year. The costume requirement will be easy, since one-piece suits experienced a huge mainstream comeback this summer.

Pinterest is seeing a lot of user activity when it comes to dressing up as Daenerys (a 91 percent rise from last year) from the HBO show. According to Pinterest, couples are planning to dress up as Adult Swim's Rick and Morty this year. The online platform has noticed more than 10K pins on users' accounts for costume inspiration from the grandfather-and-grandson cartoon duo. Bonus points if you decide to dress as Pickle Rick.

Beauty and the Beast

With the release of a live-action "Beauty and the Beast" earlier this year, friends are interested in dressing up like the characters from the film, especially as Gaston and a group of maids. Pinterest saw a whopping 680 percent jump in saved pins from last year.

Wonder Woman

Recently played by Gal Gadot in the hit DC Comics film, "Wonder Woman" is a top costume idea for solo Halloween fans. More than 60K costume ideas were saved on Pinterest of the badass female superhero.
