The scrunchie comeback has steadily been gaining momentum over the past year or so. Its origin is not entirely clear, though can probably be traced to the same '90s/'00s trend upswell that has brought us the return of lip gloss, fanny packs, bucket hats and bejeweled denim, but there have been a few landmark moments this year that have shaped the scrunchie's resurrection.
There was Frederikke Sofie looking super-cool in one in March Vogue; Bella Hadid wore one in June; Mansur Gavriel featured them chicly in its September runway show and Kim Kardashian West wore one in a high pony shortly thereafter. Now, they're available at just about every trendy retailer you can imagine.
From ponytails, to pigtails, to buns, to half-updos, there are a number of ways to wear a scrunchie. We're partial to the loose way Mansur Gavriel hairstylist Laurent Philippon did it. And generally, it's one of the easiest and most affordable ways made your look a littler more interesting and, dare I say, cool. It even looks kinda neat as a bracelet. If you're still stuck on how to wear it, just watch "Heathers" or an old episode of "Full House" — there are bound to be a decent variety of examples.
So, ignore what Carrie Bradshaw said once, swipe on some lip gloss and shop a wide range of scrunchies and scrunchie sets in the gallery below.
