Keeping in line with the recent revival of items our parents forced us wear back in the early '90s, puffer coats are officially back. No, they're no more flattering than they were during their heyday, and yes, they're about to take over whether you like it or not. (We do.)

In fact, dozens of brands — heritage, luxury and mass alike — have put their own stamp on the practical, cozy outerwear trend. Of course, like most trends poised to take over Instagram this season, Balenciaga started it — first, with its cropped red puffer from Fall 2016, and more recently, with the asymmetric, army-green style Demna Gvasalia sent down the Fall 2017 runway.

Because something that fundamentally unflattering can be intimidating to wear, there are two basic strategies to pulling off a puffer: First, you can balance out the heft of volume on top with something more basic and slim-fitting on the bottom, like cropped black jeans. Or, should you be truly daring, you can go full-on Michelin Man (you didn't think we'd get through this without at least a single reference to the marshmallow-like mascot, did you?) with wide-leg trousers and an oversized cardigan that peeks out beneath. You'll be nice and toasty when the temperatures drop — not to mention perfectly on-trend.
