Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than five million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.

The "cut crease" is one of those fancy makeup techniques that became incredibly popular with the rise of YouTubers and the Instagram beauty aesthetic. It is used to describe an eye-shadow effect that features two different shades "cutting" across each other, without being blended together. It creates a sharp line that enhances eye shape and certainly brings the drama (it's not for the makeup minimalists out there), and it's notoriously regarded as one of the trickier beauty techniques to master.

This makeup tutorial from YouTuber Ellarie breaks it down into a series of simple steps that will bring you much closer to being able to call yourself a cut crease master. The look she creates is a fairly subdued one: matte, tone-on-tone brown and brick shades come together for a cut crease that's especially pretty paired with Ellarie's dark brown eyes.
