Fashion's love affair with the statement blouse reached a fever pitch last spring. Thanks to collections from the likes of Johanna Ortiz, Gucci, Jacquemus, Off-White and many more, shirts over the past few seasons have come ruffled, puff- or bell-sleeved, detached at the shoulder, tied at the waist and high-collared, to name just a sampling of the iterations we've seen on the runways and in street style galleries. I've never been one to hop directly on a trend bandwagon, especially when said trend is tricky to pull off. The few times I've tried on statement blouses, I found myself completely puzzled — and in a case or two, stuck inside the shirt because I couldn't figure out how to remove it on account of the frills.
That said, I do find that my collection of button-up blouses is a little boring, which is why I am enamored with the piece I recently came across by Isabel Marant. It's a nice update to my already solid collection of trusty chambray shirts, and the raw-edged ruffles are pretty without being too prim. Denim shirts are casual on principle, but thanks to the slim cut, it's work-appropriate when tucked into trousers and paired with block heels. I can see this becoming a wardrobe staple fast, and it will help me make just enough of a statement without veering into try-hard territory.
Isabel Marant Étoile Lawendy blouse, $270, available at Net-A-Porter.
