Welcome to our column, "Hey, Quick Question," where we investigate seemingly random happenings in the fashion and beauty industries. Enjoy!
On Sunday, Brazilian model Adriana Lima posted a statement on Instagram that declared, "I will not take [off] my clothes anymore for [an] empty cause." Lima has long been known for her bombshell body, but her lengthy Instagram post suggested that she's had a shift in perspective.
"Something had changed in me when a friend approached me to share that she was unhappy with her body," Lima wrote. "I realized that majority of woman probably wake up every morning trying to fit in a stereotype that society/social media/fashion etc. imposed... That's not physically and mentally healthy, so I decided to make that change."
Since Lima has more consecutive years as a Victoria's Secret Angel under her belt than any other model, some have assumed that Lima is implying that she'll no longer work with the lingerie retailer in the future. But here's an alternative idea: What if Lima's sentiments were directed not toward VS, but rather toward the Love Advent Calendar?
The fact that Lima started her statement by asserting that she had "received a call for the possibility of filming a sexy video... to be posted and shared in social media," combined with the specific timing of the post and Lima's past, make us wonder if what sparked Lima's re-evaluation was actually Love's Advent videos. While Lima hasn't appeared in Love's iconically sexy Advent series since 2015, she posed for the magazine's Easter equivalent this year in a video that featured close-ups of her lingerie-clad (and occasionally naked) body in the shower while she ate a chocolate Easter egg.
So did Lima refuse a request to participate in this year's Love Advent series? Or is she declaring her intent to hang up her Angel wings? Only time will tell, but either way, we'll be watching closely to see how Lima's new direction affects the kinds of jobs she is willing to take in the future.
