It's that time of year again: No, not the holidays — the season wherein just about every person I've ever met contacts me to ask what they can do about their suddenly very dry skin. Sticking to a strict routine with a good moisturizer and hand cream can go a long way, but the real root of the problem is that cold winter wind and indoor heating systems make the air around us very dry. So, if you're really going to correct flaky, parched winter skin (and even moisture-starved, bleary eyes), the trick is to add some hydration back into the air via a humidifier. For my bedroom, I've found this full-size one to be a solid choice, but because the Fashionista office is also quite arid, I keep this one at my desk.
Even as I write this, it's misting away next to me, humidifying my environment. What I love about it is that it's a cool-mist variation; you don't want those heated humidifiers your parents used to plug in when you were sick — those are prone to mold, ick. It's also compact, taking up fewer than five inches of valuable desk real estate and can be used with any plastic water bottle with a standard opening. (I like to use one of the big, liter-sized guys so that I don't have to keep getting up to refill the water throughout the day.)
