I'm by no means a skin-care expert, and tend to avoid products that I don't fully understand. Serums are one example: I'm never sure what ingredients I need or whether they're too heavy for my acne-prone skin. Plus, they tend to be pretty expensive, and I don't want to invest in something that I'm not sure will work.

But a few weeks ago, I went to an event for innovative skin-care brand Skin Inc where guests were invited to create their own custom-blended serum — not an editor perk, as these are available to anyone, as is the fun quiz you take to determine which combo of three serums will work for you. Although I did have the advantage of having brilliant Skin Inc founder Sabrina Tan help me through my quiz (and, ya know, not having to pay for it).

After filling in my lifestyle habits — yeah I drink, no I don't exercise — and concerns like acne, redness and hyperpigmentation, I ended up with a combo of vitamin C, ceramides and licorice in a cute little pink bottle. Each ingredient lives in a little capsule so that it doesn't mix with and contaminate the other ingredients until they hit your skin. I was still skeptical, but I love it. It's super, super lightweight, seems to calm my skin instantly, and after a few weeks of using it, I definitely notice a difference.
