When I first shaved my head a few summers ago, I borrowed clippers from a friend of mine and enlisted the help of a girlfriend to make sure I didn't miss any spots on the back of my head. It was an act that at the time seemed sort of exciting — look Mom, look Instagram friends, I shaved my head! — but a year and a half later, it's become just a mundane grooming ritual I undertake every week or so.
But here's the kind of absurd thing: Even though I now shave my head on a regular basis, I still have not purchased my own set of clippers. Instead, I traipse over to my neighbor pal's place like I'm asking for a cup of sugar or wait for my best friend to bring their clippers over when we hang at my apartment. In the hyper-independent world of New York, a little interdependency has felt like a good thing. I like that my need to borrow something has given me motivation to touch base with people I care about even when I'm "too busy."
That said, I'm wondering if it might be time to invest in a pair of clippers for myself. My relationships with both of the people I borrow from are well-established enough that I shouldn't really need an "excuse" to see them at this point. Plus, these clippers, which are my favorite of the two styles I've extensively borrowed, are only $20. And who knows? Maybe my friends' clippers will break or get dull at some point, and I'll finally have the chance to return the favor they've extended to me so often.
