When I visited Fivestory's Upper East Side boutique for a story late last summer, owner Claire Distenfeld was excited to show me a few in-house items that were part of a growing Fivestory line. At the time, I was intrigued by the selection of exclusive berets in collaboration with Laulhère, but considering it was still crazy-hot out, I didn't exactly race to pick one up for myself.
Still, the seed was planted, and as temperatures dropped I couldn't stop thinking about these damn berets. Obviously they're on-trend, but they're also classic; they're well-made without carrying an exorbitant price tag; most importantly, they're just really cute, and the idea of wearing one made me smile. Suddenly, I was obsessed. I put the black, sparkly beret on my Christmas wish list and ultimately bought it as a holiday gift for myself.
Now I'm a total beret convert. Honestly, I hate most winter hats; they can pretty much ruin your hair, so you really have to commit, and I've never been able to pull off the ubiquitous beanie. This, though? This, I can do. And now I feel like I must have one in every single color. Next on my list is this fuzzy pink style — and with Valentine's Day right around the corner, I think I know just how to treat myself.
Fivestory New York "Chiara" beret in pink angora, $156, available at Fivestory New York
