These days, you can't truly be an It Girl unless you've got a fashion collaboration: There's Bella Hadid for Chrome Hearts, Taylor Hill for Joe's Jeans, Elsa Hosk for Bik Bok and Gigi Hadid for just about everything, from Tommy Hilfiger and Maybelline to Stuart Weitzman and Messika.
Genetically predestined supermodel Kaia Gerber is officially joining those ranks — and perhaps even vaulting over them — by partnering with Karl Lagerfeld's eponymous line, per WWD. Lagerfeld reportedly had Gerber singled out even before her first (and admittedly stellar) fashion season last September.
The collection, which has been in the works for months, will mix Lagerfeld's "Parisian chic" with Gerber's "signature West Coast casual style" across ready-to-wear and accessories, and will cover the wearer from day to night. Lest this seem like Lagerfeld is simply stamping Gerber's name on the tags in an effort to move some product, CEO Pier Paolo Righi says in a statement that Gerber has been "working intensely" with the design team. "It was exciting to see her clear vision, passion and engagement, and the collection will definitely inspire many young women," he says.
That's surely just what Lagerfeld et al are hoping for come September, when the collection will launch with events in New York, Paris and Los Angeles. While current plans only include one capsule, we're guessing the brand wouldn't say no to a Tommy x Gigi-style blockbuster partnership.
We've reached out to Karl Lagerfeld and will update with any further information.
UPDATE, Tues. Jan. 16, 2018 9:30 a.m.: A representative for Karl Lagerfeld has sent two images teasing the capsule; one is of Kaia Gerber inspecting a glove that will reportedly be a part of the collaboration.
The other is of the logo for the collection:
The collection will launch this fall in Karl Lagerfeld stores, Karl.com and via select wholesale partners.
UPDATE, Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, 9:00 a.m.: Campaign imagery and additional information on Karl Lagerfeld x Kaia were revealed on Monday morning. According to WWD (in addition to Karl Lagerfeld stores, Karl.com and select wholesale partners), the collection will be released on an exclusive e-commerce platform for two weeks come Aug. 30. A series of events to celebrate the launch will also take place in Los Angeles, New York and Paris.
The collection — and the brand's largest collaboration to date — combines Lagerfeld's Parisian aesthetic with Gerber's California-hometown style: Think cropped tuxedo blazers with sporty side stripes, biker jackets emblazoned with handwritten graphics and plenty of logo-covered hoodies, T-shirts and matching athleisure sets. Accessories are also included in the mix, such as fashion socks, handbags (mini-backbacks, crossbody bags and fanny packs), sunglasses, jewelry and chunky sneakers.
"I have loved being a part of the creative process and working with Karl is a dream," said Gerber in an official statement. "I've always thought that he's a genius, so it's amazing that he's shown me some of his trade. It has given me a new appreciation for how hard designers work, and how much creativity and thought goes into every collection."
Added Largerfeld: "Kaia has a youthful, independent attitude that is inspiring."
UPDATE, Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, 3:00 p.m.: The collaboration's exclusive retailer has been announced: Revolve.com will be offering the Karl Lagerfeld x Kaia collection, priced between $35 and $1,045, beginning on Aug. 30 for two weeks.
"Kaia is the quintessential Revolve girl — she's LA born and raised, hardworking, social, she has elevated taste and an eye for what’s relevant now. We're certain the collection will be well received by our Revolve customer and we’re thrilled to be supporting both Karl Lagerfeld and Kaia in launching this exciting, creative capsule to the world," said Michael Mente, Revolve Co-CEO & Co-founder in an official statement.
The LA retailer will co-host three anticipated launch events, taking place at the Revolve Social Club on Aug. 31 (followed by an experiential pop-up shop open to the public) and New York City on Sept. 12 at the Karl Lagerfeld flagship, as well as in Paris for an invite-only event on Oct. 2 during Paris Fashion Week.
