I'll admit, I am slightly over the fashion industry's collective obsession with streetwear. Don't get me wrong: Labels like Supreme, Fear of God, Palace and Kith consistently put out great collections that are worth the hype, and luxury brands like Balenciaga, Vetements, Alexander Wang and Gucci have offered sweatshirts, sneakers and outerwear that have made me consider charging several thousand dollars I do not have to my credit card. However, many of the aforementioned options are oversized, logo-heavy and, if I'm being honest, too ubiquitous for my taste. As much as I love the Gucci "bootleg" T-shirts, I'm not keen on investing in trendy items that I've already seen on Instagram one million times.
One of the most buzzy streetwear-inspired labels out there is Virgil Abloh's Off-White, whose 2017 Nike collaboration was nearly impossible to get and whose graphic hoodies and branded, industrial-style belts have been pervasive in street style galleries for several seasons running. I consider myself a big fan of Abloh — particularly of his inclusive attitude and his eagerness to democratize fashion — but I've yet to find a piece from Off-White that suits my style... and that doesn't break the bank. So you can imagine my delight when I came across this cropped white crew neck sweatshirt from the Resort 2018 collection that's both sweet and subtle enough to fit seamlessly into my wardrobe.
It has a forest green, varsity-style screen print of "woman" on the chest, a nod to his powerful, modern female customer. Instead of the usual diagonal lines, quotation marks or intersecting arrows that adorn most Off-White sweatshirts, this one has a lovely pink and green poppy graphic across the back that's about as feminine as can be. It could serve as a great layering piece through the rest of the winter, but worn on its own throughout the spring. I promise I will never go full hypebeast (hypebae?), but consider this my entry point.
