Gigi and Bella Hadid Close Another Powerful Prabal Gurung Runway Show - Fashionista
The designer's Fall 2018 collection was inspired by powerful women.

These days, Prabal Gurung has established himself as one of the can't-miss shows of New York Fashion Week for everyone from major fashion editors and celebrities to political icons like Gloria Steinem. To wit: Sunday night's presentation brought out Laverne Cox, Janet Mock, Whoopi Goldberg, Cardi B and her fiancé Offset (who sneakily lit up mid-show), Huma Abedin and #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, the latter of whom was there for her first-ever fashion show.

Of course, the clothes are good, but what really packs out Gurung's killer front rows is his commitment to making women feel powerful through fashion. His Fall 2018 runway was no different; backstage, bright posters by Papyrus gave models instructions like, "Your voice is your power: Use it for justice," and "YOU are the present, YOU are the future, YOU rule the world, WALK with intention." And Gurung doesn't just talk the talk. In recent seasons, he has fully walked the walk by casting a diverse crew of models in just about every sense of the word.

That included sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid, who shared a touching sibling moment during the show's strong finale. After all the models walked out together, holding white flowers and some linking arms, they stood in front of the photographers' pit in complete silence. As they left the runway, Bella looped her arm around Gigi's back, a lovely gesture to close out a beautiful show.

All of that feminine power was also channeled through the excellent collection. Gurung's vision for Fall 2018 was inspired by the many powerful women in his life back home, as well as women-dominated groups like India's Gulabi Gang and the Mosuo tribe of China. As it happens, pink is the common color shared by these cultures, but Gurung cut through the sweetness with strong shapes, sturdy knits and interesting embellishment, like tie closures on a black blazer or ombré swathes of feathers.
