BPCM interns will be exposed to projects pertaining to public relations, such as assisting Account Executives with research projects for upcoming events, strategy brainstorming for our clients, assisting with press clippings and client mentions, as well as helping with day-to-day showroom activities. Showroom activities include assisting with showroom appointments, where interns interact and gain face time with celebrity stylists and fashion editors in the industry, as well as dealing with merchandising and sample trafficking. Interns are also given scenario-based projects, in which they are able to apply PR tools and techniques they learn in the classroom. Scenario-based PR projects include anything from pitching client collections to prominent celebrity stylists to coming up with new gifting strategies for our clients’ upcoming collections. The goal with these projects is to challenge our interns to think critically and strategically on how to best showcase the brands we represent to their target audience and target celebrity list.

BPCM takes pride in interacting with all interns and ensuring that they get as much exposure and experience not only in the field of Public Relations, but the fashion industry as well. Serving as the interns’ direct supervisor, I am responsible for training interns with all general systems we use in our office, such as Fashion GPS, press clipping procedures, and reporting to Account Executives for projects. I sit down with each intern on their first day to discuss all of the mentioned systems, as well as talking them through all of the details on what the internship program entails. During this one-on-one, I also make sure to ask what the intern hopes to get out of their internship and what their interests are to properly determine which Account Executive they shall be paired up with. Each intern is paired up with 1-2 Account Executives in our office for the duration of their internship. The Account Executive serves as both their point person for projects and as their mentor as well. Interns are encouraged to sit down with their Account Executives either on a weekly and/or monthly basis for progress check-ins and areas for improvement. Before an Account Executive assigns their designated intern with a task or project, they make sure to walk them through the purpose of the assignment, details, expectations, deadlines and outcomes. Interns have full access to all of our databases we use in order to be successful with these assignments and projects, and will have full knowledge of what each database is used for.

At the end of the internship, each intern should have knowledge of systems and databases that are frequently used in most fashion PR showrooms/offices such as Fashion GPS, IDS Picture Desk, Fashion Monitor, etc. Moreover, interns should gain exposure and experience in strategy building for fashion brands and pitching techniques. Additionally, interns will be exposed to different professionals from the industry, such as our Account Executives who have had numerous years of PR experience, celebrity stylists and fashion editors, which will allow them to build their connections and networks early on in their career.
