I used to have a fraught relationship with bodysuits. Part of me always loved the torso huggers for their ability to pair exceedingly well with high-waisted bottoms, and the other part of me always worried that I was wearing a strange iteration of Spanx. But as someone who's literally sported the tight onesies since my tutu-filled infancy, they've became second skin to me, and I now view them as closet staples (even if they demand patience and dexterity to put on and take off).

The bodysuit has proven to be a valuable and versatile category in my wardrobe. They're easily layerable; they help you avoid that frumpy, untucked dad T-shirt look; and they go with denim in all of its many forms. What's more, they come in a multitude of styles and silhouettes: turtleneck, flared sleeve, off-the-shoulder, plunging neckline, sleeveless, crewneck and low-back. And they're offered in a range of comfy materials, from stretchy, soft jersey and spandex to plush velvet. Plus, they can be embellished with romantic lace, flirty ruffles, lace-up detailing and cool cut-outs.

And while it's sometimes difficult to separate bodysuits from going-out attire and sexed-up Instagirls — i.e., the Hadids, Emily Ratajkowski and the entire Kardashian-Jenner Klan — you don't have to reserve them for your nights on the town. Wear them to work with a checkered blazer or to a casual dinner with baggy jeans.
