Question: Is there, currently walking among us on this earth, anyone who can make a single fashion item look cool as easily as Alexa Chung does?
Answer: No. That's why I'm currently contemplating dropping a few hundred bucks on a series of faux pearl embellished hair clips from Simone Rocha's excellent Spring 2018 collection. Chung wore them styled as Rocha did in her show, clustered together with her hair in finger waves. But they went just as well with the cream-colored dress she wore to Rocha's Fall 2018 show as they did the sleek red trench she wore to Burberry, the pink velvet dress she wore to a Vogue party and the graphic tee paired with denim at another London Fashion Week party. (Yes, Chung changed four times in one day. I told you: Legend.)
I've been known to entertain a hair accessory or two in my day, so this was admittedly not a hard sell — plus, I already love pearls. The bonus of these is that they can easily go full Blair Waldorf with a ladylike dress and Mary Jane heels, hair perfectly done, or subversively cool with a pair of distressed jeans and beat-up booties, with messy bedhead. So the question isn't if I'll buy one, it's which one I'll get first: The simple pearl and crystal slide, the one with pearls clustered to look like flowers or the one with oversize pearls?
Simone Rocha silver-tone faux pearl and crystal hair slide, $130, available at Net-a-Porter; faux pearl-embellished hair clip, $81, available at MatchesFashion.com; crystal-embellished hair clip, $170, available at MyTheresa.com
