I have discussed at length my hatred for most sandals. I don't know where it comes from — I'm from Florida, after all! — but I have a very difficult time finding a sandal I don't mind wearing.
After somewhat exhaustive search, I found a pair that matches all my qualifications: It laces up at the ankle (do not bring a flip flop near me in New York City, please!), it exposes enough of the toes (for pedicure purposes) and it doesn't break the bank (if you're spending more than $100 on a pair of sandals, you're lighting money on fire, imo). Leave it to Madewell to make a leather sandal that looks cute but not crunchy (another qualification!). They're comfortable — the break-in period hasn't brought up any blisters or cuts, a rarity in the summer shoe world — and they work just as well with dresses at the office as they do cuffed denim on the weekends.
Am I a full-sandal convert? Not quite. But when temperatures climb above 90 degrees or I'm headed to the beach, I'm more than happy to lace these on.
Boardwalk lace-up sandal in black, $59.50, available at Madewell.
