As someone with always-oily skin, I'm well-versed in the art of mattifying my complexion: I dust my face in plenty of setting powder, apply highlighter with caution and always have blotting paper stashed in my bag. But when my skin is hit with a particularly greasy spell (thank you, hormones and humidity!), there's little I can do to blot away the damage. That's why I've set out on a mission to find the most fast-acting skin-care solutions to lessen the blow. The first step? Finding the best face washes to help regulate and balance oil production.

The trick to getting it right, according Dr. Rachel Nazarian, a dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, is actually somewhat surprising. "Stronger and harsher isn't the solution for those with oily skin," she says. "Rather than cleansers that strip natural moisture and trigger irritation, I recommend using gentle ingredients like sulfur or micellar water."

In addition to choosing the right formula, it's also crucial to stick to  a consistent skin-care routine. "As counterintuitive as it may seem, less is more," explains Dr. Shereene Idriss of Union Square Laser Dermatology, also in New York City. "If you over-wash your face, you'll end up depriving your skin of its natural oils. This, in turn, will cause your skin to overcompensate by producing more oil." In general, make sure you're cleansing your face once in the morning and once before bed — and always follow up with a lightweight moisturizer.

Ahead, Dr. Nazarian and Dr. Idriss break down their favorite cleansers for oily skin — including luxe formulas and drugstore bargains.
