Ever since we ran a shopping story on shell jewelry, I've seen the trend everywhere, from Cool Teens™ visiting New York City to almost every influencer on my Instagram feed. I'm now convinced that I, too, need my own shell jewelry, but I don't exactly want to repurchase what I've likely bought at a souvenir shop down the shore before.
That's where this Isabel Marant necklace comes in. For starters, it's gold, which can easily blend in with my everyday collection of jewelry. It's also a pendant necklace, rather than the usual anklets and chokers that shell enthusiasts are wearing these days. I also love that it's specifically a cowrie shell, which, as soon as I came across this necklace, brought back some major nostalgia.
Back in the day, I used to play this game called Sungka — something that my parents would also play as kids in the Philippines. It's comprised of a long board with two rows of carved-in pits that are filled with, you guessed it, cowrie shells. I was obsessed with this family activity and can't exactly remember where our game of Sungka is now. (Perhaps it was left behind or donated once we moved houses.) But at least I know this necklace will always bring back some fun childhood memories.
