As legacy fashion houses stay locked in their seemingly never-ending quests to stay relevant among millennial and Gen Z shoppers, Fendi has proven itself to be a formidable competitor. Its all-over F-print pieces have dominated street style photos, Instagram, editorial shoots and paparazzi images for much of 2018; it cast a handful of social media's savviest models like Kendall Jenner, the Hadid sisters and Adwoa Aboah as recent faces; and for Fall 2018, it debuted a retro collaboration with sportswear giant Fila that's flying off the shelves, at least if the line's ubiquity in front rows thus far this month is any indication. Clearly, the Italian brand is adept at adapting to changing times, and its hot streak is likely to continue into next season.
For Spring 2019, which walked the runway on Thursday morning in Milan, Fendi leaned hard into the "upscale sport" aesthetic, taking some of athleisure's greatest hits — sports bras, bike shorts, oversized bomber jackets, cropped rain slickers — and slapping its signature logos on them. Utility was a key concept this season, as well: Large cargo pockets accented everything from overcoats to top-handle handbags, while some models were accessorized with leather phone-sized cases strapped across their chests, small snap-closure pouches, key rings and carabiners hanging from their belts, with industrial-style buckles cinching their waists.
Transparency is having a moment among the Instagirl set — think see-through totes and plastic shoes — and much like designer Karl Lagerfeld's Spring 2018 collection for Chanel, he offered up plenty of fantastic plastic options this season at Fendi, namely the sporty coats that opened the show. The belt bag trend is still going strong, too, and Fendi presented several options on the runway, including a classic square-shaped style embossed with Fs, as well as a proper fanny pack with labeled utility pouches.
Not to be outdone by its French luxury market rival Dior, which re-released its early-2000s hit Saddle Bag earlier this year to much fanfare, Fendi revived another Carrie Bradshaw favorite, its Baguette bag, in several colorways for spring. If you know what's good for you, you'll start hunting vintage or resale stores high and low for one before they start dominating Instagram and therefore become impossible to get.
