Ever since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, the world's eyes have been fixed on Meghan Markle — and her style. We'll be following the Meghan Markle Effect™ with our column, "Meghan Markle Wore a Thing."
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, made her first solo appearance since marrying into the royal family on Tuesday evening to celebrate the opening of "Oceania," a new exhibit at the Royal Academy of Arts. The exhibition, which features artwork spanning more than 500 years, is the first major survey of Oceanic art held in the U.K. For the occasion, the Duchess chose a Givenchy dress, solidifying the French house as one of her early favorites.
Since she wed in an elegant bespoke Clare Waight Keller gown, the royal has collaborated with the designer again and again: She wore Givenchy to her first solo engagement with the Queen, then to the Royal Ascot and, most recently, on a trip to Dublin. But who can blame her? When Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, entrusted Alexander McQueen's Creative Director Sarah Burton with designing her royal wedding dress in 2011, she continued to choose ensembles from the British fashion house on a regular basis.
This particular Givenchy look is sleek in its formfitting A-line silhouette and boasts a subtly sexy high slit in the front. The long-sleeve dress also featured elegant accents like sheer, billowy sleeves and a triangular panel of plush velvet. She paired the all-black cocktail-style frock (available in a mini silhouette here) with black slingback pumps by Aquazzura and a Givenchy satin clutch. The Duchess jazzed up her ears with a pair of Birks sparkly white gold diamond earrings and left her shiny hair down and straight. Finally, she wore a touch of coral gloss on her lips to complete the look.
