The official first day of New York Fashion Week kicked off on a very hot, very humid Thursday. But that didn't stop showgoers from dressing up. We spotted a few street style stars in dresses and blouses that boasted big, billowy sleeves — a sartorial tactic that's both a fashion statement and a hack to beat the city heat.

The dramatic sleeve silhouette has been a favorite in the fashion space for some time, even becoming one of the best-selling street style trends from last September's fashion month. This season, we saw puff sleeves in a number of different versions, including classic white dresses, a full-on sequin gown and covered in a checkered print and fringe.

Luckily, the temperatures will cool down for the rest of the week. So we're hoping to see some more fall-friendly ensembles as the shows go on.
