The Cargo Pants Comeback Is Solidified on the Spring 2019 Runways

Get ready to pretend like you didn't spend years hating them.

It feels like just yesterday that cargo pants were objectively ugly, but if the Spring 2019 New York Fashion Week runways are anything to go by, it won't be long before we're all wearing them.

The return of cargo pants has been threatening us for a while: We've seen them on about every Kardashian/Jenner and a number of street style stars, often dressed up with strappy heels or boots. They can be seen as one of many aspects of utilitarian workwear (and, of course, nostalgia) that are infiltrating fashion right now. See also: high-visibility clothing and Heron Preston x DSNY.

But don't worry, the cargo pants that designers have been showing on the runway over the past few days are a pretty far cry from the ones you bought while back-to-school shopping at Old Navy in elementary school, or the ones in which your algebra teacher stored his TI-83. Prabal Gurung showed them on Bella Hadid (who, we must note, has a preternatural ability to look good in anything) in this season's very popular hot pink; Jonathan Simkhai's looked fresh and Hamptons-ready in white; Sies Marjan's were loose and languid, while John Elliott and Ralph Lauren showed fitted options, with the latter also offering a sporty version. Claudia Li, meanwhile, showed a cargo skirt.
