I'm a firm believer that no good has ever come from one person telling another to "relax" or "calm down." Not only is this type of remark often a way of minimizing someone's experience and the validity of their feelings, but it's also a condescending, derogatory way of belittling people — particularly women — and essentially calling them unhinged, erratic or hysterical. Dare I say, now, more than ever, no thanks!!!!!!
Bearing that in mind, I've always been absolutely obsessed with the T-shirts the nail artists at Chillhouse, one of my favorite NYC nail spots, wear; they're printed with the simple phrase: "Don't tell me to relax." I have repeatedly asked if I could buy one for myself, and now, with the launch of e-commerce and merch on Chillhouse's website, I officially can. (I should point out in the interest of full disclosure that, in fact, I was very lucky to receive one in a mailing from Chillhouse.) And let me tell ya, it's exactly what I needed at the moment. The super-soft cotton tee is, indeed, relaxing — I wore it to a yoga class last week and have no doubt that it upped my calm factor — and it also accomplishes the job of telling belittling misogynyts to leave me the hell alone. (In a well-designed, serif font, no less.)
