Ever since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, the world's eyes have been fixed on Meghan Markle — and her style. We'll be following the Meghan Markle Effect with our column, "Meghan Markle Wore a Thing."

Serena Williams and Meghan Markle, aka the Duchess of Sussex, have a well-documented friendship that began years before Markle had any connections to English royalty. Williams was present at the Duchess's wedding to Prince Harry, and proof of the two's friendship has continued since: most recently, through what the Duchess chose to wear on the latest stop of her Australian tour, for her visit to Victoria Park in Dubbo.

The Duchess opted for an oversized plaid blazer from her pal's eponymous label, which is still available on the Serena Williams brand website and retails for $145. The Duchess paired the blazer with a crisp white oxford shirt from Maison Kitsuné, black jeans by local Australian ethical fashion label Outland Denim, black heeled boots from J.Crew and a delicate initialed necklace from Australian jeweler Natalie Marie. The outfit was the perfect combination of style and substance: It looked great, yes, but it also provided an opportunity for the Duchess to support her friend, local Australian brands and the ethical fashion ecosystem all at once.
