Ever since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, the world's eyes have been fixed on Meghan Markle — and her style. We'll be following the Meghan Markle Effect™ with our column, "Meghan Markle Wore a Thing."
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are halfway through their royal tour, arriving in Tonga on Thursday where they attended a state dinner and reception with King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u at the Consular House in Nuku'alofa that evening. For the special event, Meghan Markle wore a custom Theia gown made from ivory crepe. The column silhouette features flanged shoulders — accentuated with hand-embroidered appliqués of crystals and micro-glass beads — a jewel neckline and a side slit.
For accessories, the Duchess kept things simple but classic: Birks "Snowstorm" diamond earrings from the Canadian brand's Snowflake collection and a matching bracelet, black Aquazzura heels and a Givenchy black satin clutch with a jewelry clasp.
Theia's Creative Director Don O'Neill released a statement on Thursday, expressing how grateful he is for the opportunity to create a custom design for the Royal herself. (After all, she was a huge inspiration for the bridal label's Spring 2019 collection.)
"It has been an exciting whirlwind collaboration. Her Royal Highness is a truly beautiful inspiring woman, a bright shining light in this world and we at Theia are truly honored to be part of The Royal Tour of Australia, Fiji, the Kingdom of Tonga and New Zealand," said O'Neill.
Exciting whirlwind, indeed. O'Neill recalls Markle's stylist reaching out to him to make a dress, which prompted the designer to put his bridal show prep on hold in order to work on her gown. "We completed the gown in two days, shipped it out and received confirmation that the Duchess loved it, but with one caveat: We needed to remake it with extra seam allowance," said O'Neill. "We knew immediately why this extra allowance was required, but mum’s the word."
Less than one week from Theia's upcoming bridal show, O'Neill re-made the gown, ran it over to the nearest UPS and shipped it off to the Duchess. The speedy, hard work was well worth it.
