I promised myself that I wouldn't buy anything over the Thanksgiving holiday... but here we are. The culprit: A pair of Birkenstock clogs created in collaboration with Berlin-based media-turned-fashion brand 032c.
These Birks first graced the runway at 032c's debut show at Pitti Uomo in January, and nearly a year later, the two brands officially linked up to create a limited-edition pair in black (which I bought) and white. To make this shoe different from Birkenstock's signature A630 clog, the team behind 032c designed two different insteps — cozy shearling and a cool camo print — and added a gold-and-red button that says “Société de 032c” on each shoe.
I've been suckered into buying ugly shoes before, such as these Realtree camo-print Crocs — another brand that's cashing in on its unexpected chicness through high-end collaborations with Christopher Kane and Balenciaga. (Birkenstock also recently partnered with Rick Owens.)
While I mostly enjoy wearing my Crocs during the warmer months of spring and summer, these Birkenstock clogs will probably be my year-round pair. I can see myself throwing them over socks for a day of traveling — specifically for TSA lines and long flights — or when I'm out and about on the weekends. I might even wear them for dressier occasions, like a day full of work meetings and appointments, or perhaps at home with family while celebrating the holidays during Christmas. The clogs' aesthetic may get a few polarizing responses from my close friends and loved ones, but perhaps their versatility makes up for it.
