In case you somehow missed the many, many, many times we've written about them recently, hair accessories are majorly trending right now. It's not so much that they ever really went out of style, but more that we seem to be living in somewhat of a Golden Age of Hair Accessories. Satin scrunchies, embellished bobby pins, bejeweled headbands, metallic barrettes and enamel claw clips abound, and you can find designer options ('sup, controversial Alexander Wang claw clips?) just as easily as you can find elevated, surprisingly inexpensive ones at the drugstore.
So I wasn't exactly shocked when hairstylist and Official Queen of Instagrammable Hair Kristin Ess announced that she'd be introducing her own hair accessories into her product line sold at Target as part of a limited-edition holiday drop. But as soon as I spotted one particular piece from the collection on her feed — a medium-size gold bar clip — I became obsessed with owning it. Then, a few weeks ago, I attended a press event for the brand, and I practically attacked Kristin Ess (the person) to see if she could get me one of the in-demand hair pieces. Spoiler alert: She did. I've been wearing it basically nonstop ever since, and every time I do I get a ton of compliments.
The simple but oh-so-perfect barrette is the ideal size for my hair, measuring about three inches wide and one inch tall. And unlike standard barrettes that have a snap-in clasp and tend to snag on my hair, it relies on a clothespin-like hinge to open and close. My hair is fine and very soft, which means most hair accessories slide right out of it — but the jagged-edged teeth along the top piece of this clip make it nice and grippy, so I don't have that issue at all.
Another thing: It's not exorbitantly expensive. Not even close. It retails for a totally reasonable $14 — and it comes as part of a set that also includes a bottle of the brand's really great Beach Wave Spray. So technically, it's even cheaper than that. I highly recommend nabbing one for yourself while you can.
