I recently interviewed one of my favorite bands, Overcoats, and was really delighted to hear one half of the musical duo describe her style as "androgynous potato sack with a touch of the feminine." Have I ever resonated more with an artist talking about their style? Probably not! For proof that I've long had a thing for amorphous, bulbous and otherwise remarkably sacklike garments, one need only peruse the archives of this here column.
It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that this voluminous dress from Rachel Comey immediately caught my eye when I was browsing the ethical label's site last week. It's got that off-the-body silhouette that I love so much, and the diagonal seams and gathering at the back contribute a fun design-y touch. Add to that the eye-popping color and wide-wale corduroy — providing a very "me" way to get in on a current textile trend — and you've got the makings of a perfect dress, in my opinion. You can keep your sexy catsuits; I'll take a slightly femme designer potato sack any day.
