Ask any fashion enthusiast what their favorite thing about fall and/or winter is, and they'll likely tell you that it's the sartorial joy that comes along with ample opportunities for layering. Blouses under sweaters! A denim, fleece or leather jacket under a boxy coat! The possibilities are endless. That said, there's an art to layering that many attempt but few are able to truly master — at least on a level that, say, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have become known and adulated for.
For this reason, any little shortcut that can help achieve the ideal cold weather aesthetic is welcome in my wardrobe. Recently I came across this black knit from Alexander Wang's rebranded T line, and it's just the sort of cool yet cozy item that I reach for constantly in the winter. It's designed to look like two pieces — a sporty tank and an off-the-shoulder sweater — conveniently rolled into one, with the high-cut neckline allowing a bit of skin to peek through. Throw a cropped leather jacket on top (and, if it's really chilly, a shearling on top of that) and you're set, with minimal effort.
Nobody has to know you didn't masterfully toss an off-the-shoulder knit over a tank top to achieve this look. Plus, it's one less thing to wash (or, technically, to dry clean), and in the winter months when you're piling on layer after layer, this can turn out to be an incredible bonus.
T by Alexander Wang layered wool and stretch-cotton jersey sweater, $350, available here.
