If you've read just about anything I've ever written, you know I'm a sucker for a wellness supplement and have a weakness for anything that promises to de-stress my millennial-anxiety-ridden self. So when The Nue Co., which I recently wrote about, announced its latest supplement for promoting a zen-like state, I was very much on board. But here's the thing: It's not a pill you can pop or even a powder you can mix into your oat milk. It's a perfume you're supposed to spritz on any time you're in need of a little ~chill~. According to the brand, it draws on scientific research about the connection between scent and emotion, and supposedly it can "calm the nervous system using olfactory triggers."

In terms of the actual notes in the scent, The Nue Co.'s "Functional Fragrance" is a blend of green cardamom, iris, palo santo, violet and cedarwood, and it's described by the brand as "clean, woody, spicy and smoky." I spritzed it at my desk (I know, cardinal sin of working in a small, open-plan office — sorry, team Fash!) and at least one person thought it smelled reminiscent of Le Labo Santal 33, which isn't exactly shocking, since it was designed by Frank Voelkl, who also helped to develop that iconic scent. It certainly has the elevated, nuanced complexity of a fancy Le Labo blend, and I got multiple compliments in just the first day I wore it. It's worth noting that Voelkl is also the nose behind the perfume I wear every single day, Glossier You, so though scent is a very personal and subjective thing, suffice it to say he and I are on the same page when it comes to olfactory preferences.

As for the de-stressing aspect? I have tested that part out a few times — hence the need to mist it on at work during a particularly hectic day — and I can't say I noticed any sort of major reduction in my anxiety. But I do happen to find palo santo particularly calming, so it's nice to have a bit of it in the blend. And if nothing else, the act of taking a few seconds during a stressful situation to stop what I'm doing, mist a pleasant scent around me and take a deep breath seems like a pretty positive, healthy ritual. I'll take it.
