I attended a rooftop party this summer where the host asked everyone present to go around and state their name and star sign as an ice breaker. Much to the chagrin of my fellow millennial Brooklynites, I didn't know my astrological sign. But I did know my Enneagram personality type, and I proceeded to perhaps-too-passionately explain why everyone should learn about theirs, too.
Since then, I have committed my star sign to memory for the sake of not embarrassing my friends when I get asked about it at public functions, but the Enneagram remains my favorite system for understanding personality and relationships. Allegedly originating from the writings of an Alexandrian mystic from the fourth century, the Enneagram is a personality typology that breaks people into nine interconnected types that are meant to identify habits of thought and action, and show paths toward growth, for each.
If you're brand-new to the Enneagram, here are a few things you should know: First, the Enneagram has become well-loved by a niche (but devoted) community because of the power that community claims it has to facilitate personal, relational and spiritual transformation. And second, you're definitely not going to get a real handle on it by reading this gift guide — you'd perhaps be best off meeting with an Enneagram expert or reading a book on it, but taking a test like this one is a good place to get started in identifying your own type.
And if you're already familiar with the Enneagram, congrats! You're in the right place. If you're a good student of the Enneagram, you already know that it shouldn't be used to pigeonhole people. In the same way, this guide should be seen more as a tool to get your ideas flowing about the different kinds of gifts that could be meaningful to the different Enneagram types in your life than something to straight-up copy. (And if you're a Four reading this, I already know that your taste is too unique to be properly encapsulated by something like this in the first place. Do not @ me.)
Without further ado, here's a roundup of the best gifts to get every fashion- and beauty-conscious Enneagram lover in your life, from a chic suitcase for the experience-hungry Seven to the perfect hoodie for an inquisitive Five.
Type One: "The Reformer"
Conscientious and perfectionistic with a strong sense of right and wrong, Enneagram Ones maintain high standards for themselves and others. Indulge the One's desire for order and fastidiousness with a Senreve purse full of pockets for internal organization and a chic toothbrush, then acknowledge the One's direction of growth — in which they move toward being more fun and spontaneous — with a colorful beaded skirt from Germanier.
Type Two: "The Helper"
Generous and warm-hearted twos naturally gravitate toward spaces where they can nurture and meet the needs of others. Give the Two in your life gifts from brands that integrate giving back into their business models, whether that's a turtleneck from Kotn, a company using part of its profits to combat illiteracy in Egypt, earrings from artisan-led Soko or a bag from Nisolo, which is an ethical fashion B Corp. And because twos can have a tendency to take better care of those around them than they do themselves, encourage a little self-love with the inclusion of a relaxing bath foam.
Type Three: "The Achiever"
One of the most common personality types in places like New York City, Threes are ambitious and driven people who use a combination of hard work, strategy and charm to accomplish their goals. As a highly image-conscious type, Threes will appreciate gifts that help them look good no matter the setting — think fancy pajamas from Sleeper, a classy mirror compact and a tried-and-true portable steamer.
Type Four: "The Individualist"
Artistic and creative Fours are in touch with their emotions, expressive and inspired. Play into the Four's deep sense of their own uniqueness by picking one-of-a-kind gifts for them — think a hand-painted vintage jacket, a necklace featuring their name, a customizable tote or a skin-care regimen made from a blend of oils picked specially for their skin type.
Type Five: "The Investigator"
Type Fives are inquisitive, curious and cerebral people whose unrelenting desire to understand the world around them drives them to constantly seek new information. Fives are the kind of people who are unlikely to invest in a new purchase without thoroughly researching the product first, so make sure you give them proven best-in-class pieces, like American Giant's "Greatest Hoodie Ever Made" or retro socks from a trusted brand like Patagonia. Throw in a fashion book that will expand their knowledge of the industry as an extra treat.
Type Six: "The Loyalist"
Reliable and committed sixes are deeply motivated by the need to feel safe and secure. Help your favorite six chill out with CBD-infused lip balm and calming candles. Add a cozy Everlane fleece for maximum physical comfort, and a locking Lotuff Leather bag that will make the Six's tendency toward anxiety about things like their valuables drop down a notch or two.
Type Seven: "The Enthusiast"
Type Seven's tendency toward spontaneity, optimism and playfulness make them one of the most fun types to be around. As a type that constantly seeks out new, exciting experiences, the Seven will appreciate a chic suitcase that supports their always-on-the-go tendencies. A sustainable For Days T-shirt membership that allows for an infusion of new styles into their wardrobe and an earring that can be worn multiple ways will also help keep things interesting for a Seven.
Type Eight: "The Challenger"
Self-confident, assertive Eights are natural leaders who often exercise their considerable wills to shape the world around them. Gifting an Eight bold hardware-inspired jewelry and a bag influenced by BDSM aesthetics references the Eight's powerful aura, but a wall print from artist and poet Lora Mathis could serve as a helpful reminder to lean into the vulnerability at the Eight's core that may get buried beneath a strong exterior.
Type Nine: "The Peacemaker"
Stable, accepting Nines value harmony and often seek spiritual peace in themselves and their surroundings. An essential oil diffuser that doubles as room decor acknowledges the Nine's desire to create soothing environments and a delicate opal necklace can reference the Nine's mystical side, while a brightly tie-dyed "Thrash for Peace" T-shirt from up-and-coming label Aries encourages the Nine to seek harmony even when it's not easily achieved.
