It's getting to that point in winter when the holiday decorations and cheer have dissipated, giving way to what seems like nothing but gray skies and bitter cold. My best means of coping? Nesting! I swath myself in cozy fleeces, burrow underneath piles of blankets and light a mood-lifting candle to accompany my book reading and Nextflix watching marathons. The latest addition to my seasonally-induced hermitting? D.S. & Durga's Breakfast Leipzig Candle, which smells like a warm, inviting blend of really good coffee, almond pastries and leather-bound books.
While the brand is beloved for its intriguing, layered scents that blur gendered stereotypes and essentially take on the role of olfactory art, this candle is arguably its most accessible one yet. But that's not to call it basic: As gourmand fragrances go, it's surprisingly elevated, with complexity and nuance not often found in standard vanilla-cookie-scented candles (not that I am in any way against those). According to the brand, the official notes that make up the full accord are Javenese coffee, almond kutchen pastry, tobacco leaf, butter, leather upholstery and fireplace. Allow me to repeat: Butter! To quote my forever number one, Ina Garten: How bad can that be?
