On Monday evening in Paris, Sarah Burton beautifully executed a juxtaposition she always does so well at Alexander McQueen: the one between hard and soft. For Fall 2019, the designer presented a runway of badass chicks who don't shy away from a beautifully tailored suit, a floral print or a voluminous gown.
Models sported ears full of tough metal jewelry, thick, glossy chokers, combat boots and, sometimes, double-wrapped black belts or crossbody chain jewelry. These accents added a touch of youth and individuality to an otherwise sophisticated, powerful collection of exquisitely tailored suits, some with asymmetrically hemmed jackets; beautiful wool and leather ankle-length coats; and a variety of statement-making dresses.
The dresses were the highlights, without a doubt. On the more casual end was a cool, deconstructed white shirtdress. Things got a bit fancier with a few fitted, floral-printed dresses with ruffled skirts. Two frocks that were literally just poufs of tiered white lace ruffle skirts with black, zippered jackets as the bodice exemplified Burton's signature ladylike/tough juxtaposition to a T. Meanwhile, two leather dresses — one black, one red — were tailored in ways that defy all notions of what can be done with leather. Then came the rebelliously beautiful evening gowns that combined lace, hardware, beading and ruffles all in one piece. The biggest show-stoppers, however, were a trio of extravagant, voluminous gowns with fabric formed into gigantic rosettes.
Overall, Burton presented a strong, powerful vision of beauty and femininity with an unparalleled level of craftsmanship.
