I've been a fan of Supergoop for years because it offers such an impressive breadth of sunscreen formulas and textures. As a beauty editor, I've learned so much about how sun exposure is the number-one culprit for contributing to early signs of aging — not to mention that skin cancer is a lot more common and potentially deadly than people seem to think. With the importance of sun protection constantly being drilled into me by dermatologists and skin-care experts I interview, I'm always baffled when people tell me they don't wear sunscreen regularly.
Often, they'll tell me they know they should be slathering on broad-spectrum SPF 30 (or higher!) every single day, but have a laundry list of complaints about why they won't actually do it. It's greasy, it pills under makeup, it's an extra step in their morning routine, it's hard to wash off, it smells bad, it's chalky, it's sticky, it feels heavy on skin. But Supergoop has found ways to get sunscreen into so many different forms: gel stick, serum, face mist, spray-on oil, makeup primer, hand cream, mousse, moisturizer, setting powder, lip balm, self-tanner, eye cream and — most recently — dry shampoo and cream eye shadow.
When I first tried Shimmershade, the aforementioned eye shadow, I was a little skeptical. Was this really something anyone had been asking for? But then I swiped the creamy, amazingly smooth pigment over my eyelids, only to be surprised by just how much I really, truly liked the stuff.
I personally gravitated to the "Golden Hour" shade, a warm, peach-y champagne that's subtly shimmery and similar to my ideal highlighter hue. It lends a faint glimmer that can be layered for a bit more intensity (but really can't be overdone), and it couldn't be easier to just swipe on with your finger. It blends seamlessly over lids and has a soft powdery finish, not a greasy or chalky one like I would have expected. I'd like it even if it had absolutely no skin-care benefits, but knowing that I'm also getting an extra dose of SPF 30 on top of my usual sunscreen is a nice bonus. (Yes, you still need to use actual sunscreen underneath it if you want to make your dermatologist proud!)
So, to recap: It's an ultra-blendable, foolproof eye shadow that's easy to use, subtle yet pretty — and it provides additional protection against early signs of aging, sun damage and skin cancer. What's not to like?
