Gemma Chan Is Convincing Us to Revisit the 'Cold Shoulder' Trend
Any red carpet that Gemma Chan walks is a good red carpet. (See: all of our recent award show coverage where she almost always tops our best-dressed list.) The actress attended the 2019 Apex for Youth Gala in New York City on Wednesday night, and while the majority of attendees celebrated the evening with lusciously printed gowns and suits (like Olivia Munn, seen above), Chan stood out from the crowd as usual — even wearing an all-black ensemble.
Leave it to Monse designers Laura Kim and Ferndando Garcia to offer an interesting take on the classic LBD. The duo piled thoughtful details onto their Fall 2019 dress: an asymmetrical hemline, twisted fabric at the waist and an off-the-shoulder neckline with a single long sleeve, making us reconsider all of those "cold shoulder" garments we got rid of a few seasons back. Black on black was the theme of her entire look, according to Chan's stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray, as she paired the actress's dress with a matching clutch and pumps, as well as a pair Katkim diamond earrings.
For beauty, makeup artist Daniel Martin worked his magic — with the help of Dior Beauty, Clé de Peau Beauté, Tatcha and Honest Beauty — to create a slightly smokey eye and bold red lip. Hairstylist Christopher Naselli gave Chan a sleek low bun with a deep side part, accented with just a sweet hint of tendrils to frame her face.
If Chan's latest outfit isn't inspiration for your next fancy soirée, then we don't know what is. Good luck with that!
