Fashion's favorite holiday, aka the first Monday in May, aka the Met Gala always draws an impressive crowd of fashion folks and celebrities, outfitted in their zaniest, most inventive ensembles. But with the 2019 exhibition theme of "Camp: Notes on Fashion," this year's event presented all the more opportunity for unbridled creativity. That especially extended to the hair and makeup looks for the occasion: Attendees went all out with on-theme, delightfully campy wigs, lashes, hair accessories and nails, making for a fantastical beauty spectacle.
One obvious standout was Lady Gaga, who served as one of the co-hosts for the event, and turned the Met Gala red carpet into a one-woman show with four (!) different outfits. She first arrived with a giant pink bow on top of her head, which she then removed to reveal a wig studded with mini hair bows, harkening back to her own hairstyle of choice from about a decade ago. Her makeup, too, was show-stopping: Makeup artist Sarah Tanno rimmed her eyes in exaggerated black-and-white eyeliner, then layered on thick, ultra-long lashes in black and gold and teardrop-shaped rhinestones on the lower lash line. The whole look was completed with a bubblegum-pink lip color Tanno created by layering Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Flaming-oh! and Enamored Hydrating Lip Gloss Stick in Sweet Escape.
Meanwhile, for Ezra Miller, the camp theme was an opportunity to get even more experimental in his sartorial choices than he usually does (which is saying something). And damn, did he deliver: With arguably the trippiest beauty look of the evening, his makeup included five extra eyes drawn on with such confusing realism that they were almost dizzying.
Other standout beauty moments included Lupita Nyong'o, whose look included gold Afro picks and rainbow makeup; Tessa Thompson, who wore a floor-length ponytail that doubled as a whip; Cara Delevingne, who wore a headdress covered in random objects and a neon-orange stripe across her face; Ciara, whose staggeringly voluminous Afro was as beautiful as it was dramatic; Billy Porter, whose gilded headpiece and eye makeup were dripping with campiness; Lizzo, who brought major Marie Antoinette vibes in a hot-pink wig and lashes; and Elle Fanning, who sported charms on her nails for a bit of extra quirk.
