Is there anything more classic than a black-and-white ensemble? The two colors (or lack thereof, for all the artsy folks out there) go to together like peanut butter and jelly. But unlike this basic writer's favorite sandwich combo, black and white done right is anything but boring — Paris Fashion Week street style reminded us of that, and now celebrities both on and off the red carpet are doing the same.

Take Elle Fanning: While her Alexander McQueen gown had a prairie girl-inspired cut, the large black belt gave it a more striking "Game of Thrones" edge. Ella Balinska combined "The Matrix" and school girl vibes in an all-black leather trench coat, leather flared pants and a white button down. Kelela wore a similarly structured look that included a white button-down peaking out from underneath a black trench coat. Freida Pinto opted for a more classic play on the color duo with a long, black Cinq à Sept "Penelope" gown, complete with white, puffy, off-the-shoulder sleeves.

Though black and white made the rounds among celebrities, color remained a staple, too. Both Yung Miami (one half of City Girls) and Sofia Carson were eye-catching in ruffles, with the rapper decked out in a slime green Oyemwen gown and the actress donning a lavender Giambattista Valli gown, respectively. Marsai Martin wore a sleeveless electric blue Jovani dress, while Zoey Deutch wore an off-the-shoulder, red Spring 2019 Valentino gown.
