Today, neon clothing is omnipresent — pop into any boutique, department store or mass retailer and you'll surely see a neon yellow bag, bright green pants or a fluorescent magenta top. Not to mention, you can now buy the fluorescent-hued garments that graced the Spring 2019 runways of brands like Off-White, Jeremy Scott and Prabal Gurung.

Neon clothing is nothing new — and we've been following this trend's comeback as early as 2017. One might even associate the trend's origins with colorful spandex workout gear that defined the '80s, or the outlandish PVC neon outfits that cybergoths and ravers wore in the '90s. However, neon clothing has been around for nearly 70 years, thanks to the invention of fluorescent dyes. In 1946, brothers Robert and Joseph Schwitzer created Day-Glo, one of the first daylight fluorescent pigments. Years later, fabric companies decided to take part in the Day-Glo phenomenon, and we're still seeing its bright presence on the runways and among the street style crowd today.

Because of this color group's long history, investing in a trend like neon green — or other various shades of slime green, if you're leaning towards a more subtle palette — is actually a smart purchase. Plus, opting for brightly-colored heels are an edgy, yet playful option — and will go especially well with a neutral ensemble.
