I have a few pairs of Birkenstocks in my closet. Even though one pair looks like it's been through a natural disaster and the other hasn't been touched since 2014, I can't seem to get rid of them. They're the most comfortable sandals I own, and they support my foot in ways that a flimsy flip-flop or strappy slide never could. But perhaps the real reason I can't part with them is because I know they'll always come back in style.
The two-strap sandal had a moment about five years ago when they made an appearance in Céline's Spring 2013 collection. Shortly after, Givenchy made pairs in metallic and floral motifs. That summer, I promptly purchased a knock-off of the floral one in Paris and saved up all my money to buy a western-inspired style from Isabel Marant when it went on sale at Barneys. I haven't bought a pair since, although I did spend more time than I'd like to admit trying to find an affordable version of Roger Vivier's Spring 2017 crystal buckle Birkenstocks.
Now, in the year 2019, Birkenstocks are back. So, I've dusted off the pairs sitting on my makeshift shoe rack and browsed the entire web to find a new chunky style to add to my collection. I've landed on Birkenstock's Il Dolce Far Niente collection, made in collaboration with Hotel Il Pellicano in Tuscany, which includes the first-ever raffia Arizonas, along with bright red and black satin silk ones and other suede variations. Each one would go well with a chic long weekend along the coast of Italy or one spent on a city rooftop with a delectable cheese plate and a bottle of wine.
I've decided to go with the vibrant satin crimson-colored pair, because I'm in love with their pink piping and gold hardware. I've also already come up with about 15 patterned dresses I can wear them with.
