Hedi Slimane's vision for new Celine has come into sharper focus over the past few seasons since he first took the reins as creative director back in January of 2018. The French brand dropped an accent, got a new logo, put out several collections of paradigmatic Slimane club-kid clothing and become a promising stand-out in the LVMH portfolio (from a business perspective, anyway). On Tuesday, Slimane broadened his creative reach to the beauty side of the brand with the debut of "La Collection Celine Haute Parfumerie," an assortment of 11 fragrances, nine of which are set to launch in October, with two others following next year.
Slimane, who was also responsible for creating a fragrance line for Christian Dior back in 2004, oversaw not just the development of the scents themselves, but also the names and the design of the faceted flacons. With names like "Reptile" and "Nightclubbing," the '60s and '70s-inspired scents are intended to span daytime and nighttime wear, all anchored by the same "olfactory imprint" or base note, described in a press release simply as "powdery," which is then built upon with combinations of notes like iris, rose and tree moss.
Notably — and much like Slimane's signature design aesthetic — the perfumes also blur notions of the gender binary. "The faceted accords and compositions in the collection deliberately make no distinction or separation between traditional masculine and feminine notes," reads the press release. "They harmonize or blend together in a continuous questioning of modernity and identities." It's worth noting that touting fragrances as gender-neutral has become somewhat of a buzzy marketing ploy of late, with Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele recently introducing his own take on the concept.
