The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards were a celebration of the year's best music and videos, sure, but they were also a chance for musicians and music-adjacent celebrities to get delightfully quirky with their fashion. The absolute star of the show, hands down, was Lizzo, who first walked the red carpet in a red sequin dress and feather boa — custom Moschino, of course — emblazoned with the word "siren" all over. She without a doubt was having the most fun on a red carpet full of people having fun, and she kept the party going throughout the night, during her performances and while watching others perform (more on that in a moment).
Other style standouts from the event — and there were other style standouts! — included an ageless, denim-clad Lenny Kravitz who may well have time-traveled from the early '90s; Diplo's white embroidered cowboy getup by The Elder Statesman; Gigi and Bella Hadid's monochromatic beige sister act; Alison Brie's sternum-baring Elie Saab LBD; and Shawn Mendes' dark teal suit (which, though it looked good, regrettably presented its own questions of tact, given its controversial designers, Dolce & Gabbana).
All in all, it was an evening full of appropriately zany, weird and wonderfully off-kilter fashion — and it was apparent that the attendees showed up to have fun, not just with their sartorial choices, but also throughout the entire event. (See: Lizzo's personal, bedazzled bottle of Patrón that accompanied her inside the awards show and on stage, possibly de-throning Rihanna's wine glass as the new coveted cool-kid accessory.)
