Taylor Swift sartorially marked the start of her "Lover" era in a whimsical, pastel Stella McCartney gown that she wore to a BAFTA afterparty back in February. This look, and the ruffled, candied-hued ones that followed, were a massive departure from her edgy "Reputation" days, which saw Swift in a much darker color palette.
At the time, we didn't think much of Swift's decision to announce her wardrobe overhaul in a dreamy Stella McCartney dress. But now it makes sense, as the two have been working together on a collection of album merch, and it turns out, the pair are long-standing friends.
Discussed in Vogue's September cover story, the partnership came about after Swift and McCartney met at one of Swift's concerts in London. "When I started spending more time in London, Stella and I would go on walks, have cocktails, and talk about life," Swift told Vogue. "So when it came time to write this album, I name checked her in one of my songs, and when I played her the album, I said, 'Should we do something?'"
Well, they did something. The line of merch, which is inspired by Swift's latest album, as well as vintage graffiti, band T-shirts and nostalgic memorabilia, is described in the official press release as a "bold and colorful celebration of friendship and the things that they both love."
The collection features tie-dyed tees, sweatshirts, airbrushed jackets, totes and a back-to-school friendly reusable water bottle. All jersey in the collection is made from sustainable organic cotton, because the eco-conscious British designer wouldn't have it any other way.
They also collaborated on two limited-edition Stella McCartney pieces: a bomber jacket ($1,995), made from sustainable viscose, with an airbrushed heart at the front and glass rhinestone detailing, and a logo handbag ($795), made from oyster-hued Eco Alter-Nappa leather. These items will be available for exclusive order on StellaMcCartney.com starting on Aug. 22 and will be available for purchase exclusively at Stella McCartney standalone stores in London and New York on Aug. 23.
To coincide with the album release and the merch drop, McCartney and Swift will also have a pop-up store in New York City called "The Lover Experience," which will open on Aug. 23 and run through Aug. 25. More info on the temporary shop and details on the collection will be revealed in a livestream on Swift's YouTube channel at 5 p.m. EST Aug. 22.
