Among its other charming characteristics, fall is known for a bounty of (mostly good) smells: crisp air, freshly fallen leaves and ubiquitous artificially-flavored hot beverages. And fittingly, beyond the great outdoors and your nearest Starbucks, the season also marks a time when indie and legacy beauty brands alike begin to introduce some of the very best new and exciting fragrances of the year.

Historically, fall scents have been known to be more intense, bold and heady than their warmer-month counterparts, but this year's batch of perfume newbies isn't necessarily following the same old olfactory rules. That's not to say this year's lineup is completely devoid of the classic warm, spicy and woody scents — ones that incorporate patchouli, vanilla and musk — but this time around, these notes have been layered with elevated florals and crisp, nuanced fruity accords.

This fresh crop of autumnal fragrances is full of signature-scent-worthy perfumes, many of which are bound to become classics. In the gallery below, our roundup of 15 comforting, unexpected and nuanced fragrances of the season — from re-imagined classics to moody unisex colognes. Click through to meet your match.
