Universities had to majorly pivot the way they operate when the pandemic hit towards the end of the school year — and that included the all-important graduate fashion show. An invaluable opportunity for graduates to showcase their work and potentially get it in front of influential members of the fashion community, these shows are a key milestone for any fashion student.

Fortunately, art and design colleges are good at innovating and coming up with creative solutions, and the acclaimed Savannah College of Art and Design is no exception. Just as many professional designers were forced to do this past September, SCAD reimagined the runway show experience as a fashion film, entitled "Fashion in Frame."

For the film, which you can watch below, 2020 fashion graduates got an early lesson in influencer marketing: Full looks were sent to creatives, models, influencers and celebrities including Kate Bosworth, Rainsford, Charlotte Lawrence, Amelia Gray, Molly Constable and Lauren Chan. Each of them is seen modeling their pieces in and around their homes during lockdown, in some cases posing for portraits by 2014 SCAD Photography graduate Alexandra Arnold. Meanwhile, students discuss the challenges of creating their senior projects from home.

"Design creativity cannot be constrained — even by a pandemic — as evidenced by our most recent fashion, accessories, and jewelry design alumni," added Michael Fink, dean of the SCAD School of Fashion. "As our industry, rife with buzzwords, grapples with its future, this collective body of work looks forward, celebrating the unique spirit that we all possess. Fashion in Frame revels in the energy and innovative ideas that these emerging designers are now bringing into a changing industry. Handcrafted and exquisitely produced, each piece is guaranteed to make you live your life fuller, dream bigger, and fall in love with fashion all over again."

The film's online debut was preceded by a virtual panel discussion about the future of fashion, between Arnold, our own Tyler McCall, Henning Founder Lauren Chan, 2020 fashion graduate Max Condon and Professor of Fashion Doris Treptow-Kovacs. To round things out, after the premiere, SCAD hosted virtual workshops on photography and communication, plus a SCAD information session.
