Chopova Lowena Goes All-in on '90s Grunge and Punk Culture for Spring 2024
Chopova Lowena has always sprinkled punk and rock influences into its designs. From its signature carabiner-held-up kilt-like skirts to its repeated use of plaid and oversized leather belts, there's no doubt that Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena, co-designers behind the brand, have found much of their inspiration in '90s grunge aesthetics since their first collection in Spring 2020.
However, four years later, those elements are more blatantly incorporated than ever before throughout the brand's Spring 2024 collection. For starters, models were sent down a barren-looking, dingey runway to the soundscapes of heavy metal music, foreshadowing a punk-leaning display.
More grommets and belt loops are present than in seasons prior, accompanied by zip-up graffiti-covered hoodies, fishnet fabrics and checkered trousers reminiscent of those popular in '90s skater culture. While there is a greater sense of alternative influences surrounding the new collection, many of the brand's more light-hearted signatures remain — including ruffled collars, cartoonish graphics and frilly, A-line puff dresses.
Even with a darker color palette than usual and a little more edge overall, the light-hearted joyfulness behind Chopova's and Lowena's authentic expression of maximalism still ultimately shines through.
