Talk about a packed schedule.
New show reviews and galleries are in! Check out Lyn Devon, Peter Som, and Duckie Brown.
Scaling back from Fall ‘13’s audacity (to note: a camel and Pepto-pink overcoat, anyone?), Duckie Brown’s Steven Cox and Daniel Silver presented a—dare-we-say—relatively mellow collection for Spring ’14.
To introduce its Menswear Designer of the Year award last night, the CFDA gathered about 30 male models and presumably bribed them with pizza and Bud heavies into performing the groovy tune on camera--all while showcasing the nominated collections.
The 2013 CFDA awards, fashion's Oscars if you will, will be handed out in mere hours. The industry has been gathering to recognize and honor its leading talents since 1981. A lot has changed since the early years of the awards. What was once a small intimate industry event is now a widely covered celebrity event. "I think it reflects a broader shift over the last few years where fashion has become more and more popular," Style.com's editor in chief Dirk Standen told us. "The internet has had a lot to do with that. It's entertainment on a par with movies and music." So to prep you for tonight's awards we've assembled this handy primer. In it you'll find the complete list of nominees, our predictions on who will take home the big prizes, and all the celebrity presenters and attendees slated to show up.
Mark Zuckerberg is having quite a month. The Father of Facebook just turned 28, bought out Instagram for $1 billion and is now facing the most lucrative point in his career: Going IPO on Friday. We’d offer him a congratulatory “poke” but sadly, that option’s no longer available. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the IPO acronym, it stands for Initial Public Offering-- meaning that the company will finally be open to stock holders where the likes of Wall Street—-and even you!—- can purchase a part of the social media company. But with the estimated $100 billion that’s supposedly coming his way, we’re wondering whether the Harvard dropout will invest in a new wardrobe. Will he finally change out of his usual uniform consisting of dowdy college hoodies, sweat-drenched Adidas shower flip flops, and tattered baggy jeans, into something more uh, dapper? Better yet, the question posed is this: Can all the money in the world transform someone from HTML geek to sartorial chic? Fashionistas can only hope! To give him an extra boost, we’ve enlisted the help of several fashion experts from designers like Carlos Campos, Alan Eckstein from Timo Weiland and Simon Kneen of Banana Republic, to editors from GQ and Esquire, to buyers and the likes to see what kind of advice they’d shed onto Silicon Valley’s hottest star. And regardless of whether he takes our suggestions or not (note to Marky Mark: you really, really should!), happy IPO Day! We’d definitely like to send you a congratulatory poke soon—- this time, live and in-person.
more You probably already know that Duckie Brown is an awesome, entertaining and slightly insane men's clothing line; but you may not know that Duck
When I was a brand-new journalist, one of my mentors gave me a priceless piece of advice: “Don’t fall in love with your research,” he said. It’s a common problem. Like actors who get into a role, when we spend time enough time investigating something, or compiling data, we find ourselves becoming attached to it. Then, when the time comes to jettison what’s unnecessary, or seemingly superfluous to an editor, we cannot bear it. I feel like the guys from Duckie Brown are suffering from a similar problem. It seems that Steven Cox and Daniel Silver get so caught up in the novelty, history, or intricacies of their materials, they lose sight of the entire garment, or collection. While their show was a great improvement over last season’s circus parade, and ultimately a success, there were times where it felt disjointed, and off-the-mark.
Gemma Ward Says She'll Head Back to the Catwalk Someday: The crux of this story is the former It-model's relationship with Heath Ledger, but we're more interested in her possible return to the runway. {HuffPo} Note to Self: Don't Knock Off the Birkin: Contemporary label Thursday Friday is in deep water after releasing a tote bag which featured a photo of the Hérmes Birkin bag. Thursday Friday screen-printed the image of the red iconic bag onto their eco-friendly tote bags, and while the bag certainly isn't a knock-off, per se, Hermés seems to think the label is "confusing" and "misleading" its buyers. The amount for which Thursday Friday is being sued has not been disclosed, but we're guessing the major luxury label isn't asking for petty change. {She Finds} The Outnet's Marni Sale: Net-a-Porter's discount site does it again with a massive Marni sale, launching tomorrow morning. They're offering up some of the label's finest shoes, statement jewelry, and fabulous printed pieces--all marked down by up to 65%. We've already got our eye on that camel skirt. {Refinery 29}
PARIS--I’ll be honest with you, I was just happy to be inside. Not because of the cold (and Paris WAS cold this week), and not because of the free vodka, supplied by our hosts the Burkman Bros., Billy Reid, and their rep, Megan Maguire Steele, (along with GrandLifeNYC), as well as Florsheim by Duckie Brown, but because I’d never been to Le Baron before, and, like many of us who exist inside and outside of fashion’s peripheries, I’d heard stories. (I’d written one, as well, which made me doubly excited.) Since 2004, Le Baron has been the unofficial party destination for all that is fabulous during Fashion season (which, for some in Paris, as well as New York, is really all year long). ack during Bush’s first term, graffiti artist (he was a legend in Paris, with his Mr. Baron tag) and impresario André Saraiva took an abandoned brothel, partnered with its jailed owner, and made a nightclub for himself and his friends. It was a smash and reinvigorated Paris nightlife. Since then, he’s gone on to open several hotels and more clubs—like The Beatrice, in New York (RIP)—restaurants, and has teamed up with everyone from Louis Vuitton to Belvedere to The Rolling Stones. But the sexy—fine, slutty—sweaty, druggy paradise that is Le Baron remains the soul of operation André, and even if he wasn’t there, his spirit of revelry matched those of us on the dance floor and in the booths, as people shook off the exhausting week that was men’s fashion.
“Let’s put you in a ridiculous outfit,” Steven “Duckie” Cox, one half of Menswear label Duckie Brown, joked with their model. Ridiculous? Judge for yourself. With Fashion Week only a few weeks away, Cox and partner Daniel Silver were previewing their spring collection, presented in collaboration with American Crew artistic director Paul Wilson to a small group of reporters at their Meatpacking studio. The inspiration for the collection was “everything but the kitchen sink,” and the clothes live up to the name: Different materials, prints, patterns and colors define each piece. With this maximalist outlook, Duckie Brown has more than waved adieu to the austerity of 2009; they’ve killed it, buried it, and put a technicolor nail in the coffin for good measure.
Sofia for Dior, part deux! Sofia Coppola was spotted in Paris last week filming Natalie Portman and Robert Schwartzman (Apparently Jason has a cute younger brother) for an upcoming Dior campaign. We were obsessed with the last one she directed and this one sounds like it might be even more amazing. {Fashionologie} Above and Beyond: Anna Dello Russo is launching a fragrance and has released images of the campaign. The fragrance, called "Beyond," will be held in some kind of gold ornate shoe. We'll wait until we smell it to start judging. Maybe.{Elle.com} Moving On: Is Lorenzo Martone rebounding with Lance Bass? Sorry Lance, but we're going to have to call that a step down. {Gawker} The Duckies' bi-bourough living: Duckie Brown designers Daniel Silver and Stephen Cox open up their meatpacking district live/work space as well as their "country home" near Brooklyn's Prospect Park. They discuss the meatpacking district in the '80s, their Spring '11 collection, and how their life is their mood board. {Vevant}
