This week's best dressed ladies were all about simple elegance. We love Carey Mulligan's unfussy, strapless chartreuse Dior (a rare experimentation with color for the actress), as much as Kate Moss and Allison Williams' more subdued black numbers. On the edgier side of the spectrum were Rooney Mara in Proenza, Elizabeth Olsen in Chloé, and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o in Prada. Click through for all that and the rest of this week's best dressed.
It was a pretty exciting season to be at Milan Fashion Week, what with new designers coming to the forefront, old designers trying new things, Anna Wintour making the rounds, and that Prada collection. There was a lot to see, so here's what it looked like from my iPhone's point of view.
When you think of Ferragamo one of the first things that comes to mind is the Vara. Even if you don't know its name you know what it looks like--it's that mid-heeled sensible looking shoe with a stiff grosgrain bow at the top. Everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Margaret Thatcher has worn them. Your grandmother might have worn them, too, and if you were lucky, you stole them from her. They're the ultimate in granny chic (hell, I think they're just plain chic--even though I hate that word) and they turn 35 this year. To celebrate, Ferragamo has launched an innovative new online project called L'Icona. The most compelling part of this project is that for the first time ever, Ferragamo is letting shoppers customize their own Varas.
In McQueen and Peter Som, respectively, Rooney and Kate Mara basically proved that great style is genetic.
Lily Kwong is one of fashion's latest obsessions. You've probably seen this model/socialite/philanthropist on any number of street style blogs, in the pages of Vogue, or on a red carpet outside a fancy fashion event. Kwong managed to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Columbia last year (no easy feat!) all while juggling a modeling career--and right now you can find her online modeling Ferragamo's digital trunk show. She also happens to be Joseph Altuzarra's cousin--so you know fashion is in her genes. We caught up with the emerging it-girl to ask her about Columbia's fashion scene, what her Russian princess name would be (it makes sense in context, promise) and getting fashion advice from her designer cousin.
Ferragamo's spring 2013 collection doesn't hit the runway in Milan until tomorrow at 6 p.m. (that's noon EST for those of you who want to tune in and watch it stream live), but we've got an exclusive look at what's to come.
